John Romero, co-founder of id Software, best known for the Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein franchises, is working on a new first-person shooter together with his new studio, Romero Games. Romero calls the game “a new dawn” for the studio and has partnered with an unnamed major publisher to develop the game that’s based on a brand new IP.

“We are 100% focused on first-person shooters, the foundation that built our careers, our studio and a genre,” reads the front page of the studio’s official website. “Our current project is an all-new FPS with an original, new IP. Romero Games is working with a major publisher using state-of-the-art technology—Unreal Engine 5.”

The game is obviously still in the very early stages of development and Romero Games has yet to reveal any information aside from the fact that it’s an FPS. It’s also safe to say that we won’t be hearing about the game for a while since the studio is deliberately avoiding any kind of promotion or teaser at the moment. “It's way too early to share any other information on it,” said the team.

“We are deliberately not boarding the hype train,” added Romero Games Co-Founder Brenda Romero. This is presumably so the game doesn’t meet the same unfortunate fate as Daikatana, John Romero’s first game outside of id Software. The game not only fell victim to an over-hyped pre-release marketing campaign but also produced one of the cringiest and most infamous video game ad slogans in history. Needless to say, the game under-delivered after setting the bar to the loftiest of heights.
