Pirate-themed MMOORPG Sea of Thieves kicks off Season 6 with the addition of several new pieces of content, including the addition of Sea Forts and a new limited-time Adventure.

“The ghostly memories of Spanish naval Sea Forts sighted in the wake of ‘Shrouded Islands’ have now fully manifested within the Sea of Thieves. Pirates and their crews are welcome to approach, enter and – if they can – clear a path to the loot inside!”

Six Sea Forts have been added in different regions across the high seas with each regional fort sporting a unique visual style. Sea Forts offer short on-demand encounters for players looking for a quick challenge with difficulty scaling depending on how big the attacking crew is. They are actively defended by a Phantom army that players will have to defeat before they can claim the fort and the treasures within.

Once cleared, players will be able to use Sea Forts as their own personal hideout and comes complete with beds, cooking amenities, and an interactive map for planning adventures, as well as mounted cannons and a huge stash of resources that crews can use to defend their newfound home.

Season 6 also marks the official closure of the PvP Arena as the team shifts their entire focus to the free-roaming Adventure Mode.

“As we’ve shared before, only 2% of our players’ time is spent in The Arena on a consistent basis, and this has never really changed. We recognise that some criticism we might receive here is that we didn’t invest enough in The Arena to give it the best chance of success alongside the continued growth of Adventure. The reality is that as a new platform, The Arena regretfully never became popular enough to justify focusing our creative efforts there, beyond our initial efforts to refine the experience to appeal to a broader audience.”

Season 6 also comes with several quality-of-life improvements, new accessibility features, new cosmetics, and a long list of fixes. Players who’ve earned the Pirate Legend title can also look forward to a new repeatable voyage coming later in the season.

More information can be found in the full patch notes and on the Season Six landing page. You’ll also find the official update trailer right after the jump.
