Sea Of Thieves Previews Season 9’s New Chests, Mechanics, And Features

sea of thieves season 9 deep dive

Sea of Thieves is kicking off Season 9 today, just a few days ahead of its 5th anniversary on March 20th. Some of the highlights of the upcoming season include the introduction of the Chest of Fortune and the return of the Reaper Chest.

The Chest of Fortune will initially be found in locations hosting the raid-style Fort of Fortune world event but will later spawn in more locations. The chest can be exchanged for a ton of gold, reputation points for the Gold Hoarders, and ship cosmetic pieces.

The Reapers Chest, on the other hand, will return with one major change: a beacon of light will permanently mark the chest’s location regardless of whether another player has touched it or not. This should help draw in more players who’ll be competing to steal the chest to unlock unique character cosmetics.

Season 9 will also offer three new voyages for players who’ve reached Pirate Legend status. These new voyages will be available for purchase using doubloons and will revolve around finding cursed chests, black powder, and the Skull of Destiny which can be used to trigger a Fort of the Damned encounter.

The new season will also introduce several quality-of-life updates including a volume slider for the musical cues when your ship gets hit, Red Sea spawning adjustments, seagulls that point to dropped loot, harpoon gun improvements, and the addition of a fishing bait box.

The new deep dive video below should give you an idea of what to expect in the pirate MMORPG’s next season. Also be on the lookout for the Sea of Thieves’ Voyage of a Lifetime documentary premiering on the game’s anniversary.
