After numerous delays, Skull and Bones officially set sail for the vast, unforgiving world of live service last Friday. Unfortunately, it looks like players who paid for the ride aren’t impressed with what Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot described as a “quadruple A game.”

While the multiplayer pirate game’s ratings on Epic Games average at a solid 4.2, it’s Metacritic score paints a different picture with a “Generally Unfavorable” user score of 3.1 from over 450 users and an “Average” critic score of 64.

To help pull in more players, Ubisoft recently launched a free trial program on all available platforms, offering 8 hours of unrestricted access to the game. Any progress made during the free trial will carry over to the full game should you decide that it’s worth the $59.99 buy-in price. Whether it will help boost the game’s reviews or lower it even further remains to be seen.

If you missed the open beta playtest, now’s your chance to try the game before deciding to fork over your hard-earned money. The free trial is available on PC via Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
