Ubisoft is following up on last week’s Skull and Bones official gameplay and launch date reveal with a preview of the game’s loadout system, along with some of the ships and weapons that players will get to use in the upcoming pirate MMO.

A pirate isn’t a pirate without a ship and Skull and Bones has a wide array of them available for choosing. They come in various shapes and sizes which determine their overall effectiveness for various tasks such as cargo transport, combat, and navigation.

Cargo ships, for example, are great for hauling around a large amount of goods but are ineffective in naval combat which is better suited for Firepower ships. Navigation ships, on the other hand, lack the combat prowess of Firepower ships and the transport capabilities of Cargo ships but have the advantage of speed and are the fastest ships in the game.

Each ship also comes with unique perks that grant various bonuses such as increased ramming damage or extra cargo capacity.

Players will also be able to equip their ships with various weapons depending on its size. “The bigger the ship, the more weapons it can mount,” said Ubisoft. “Additionally, bigger, more spacious ships will be able to equip bigger weapons like the dreaded Giant Ballista or Greek Fire.” Different weapons also do different types of damage and have varying damage, range, reload time, projectile travel time, area of damage, and other characteristics.

“You will thus need to carefully choose which weapons will play an important part in winning your skirmishes,” the studio said. “Depending on your combat-style, you might want to favour some weapons above others. For example, demi-cannons have a faster rate of fire and will be deadly when used at close range but are not suited for long range engagements. A Giant Ballista takes time to aim and charge but will pack a deadly punch at long ranges.”

In addition to weapons, players can also equip their ships with an assortment of accessories and armor, as well as furniture that grants added bonuses to different ship stats. “Investing in some furniture will give you the edge you need to survive combat or the harsh elements of Skull and Bones and emerge victorious, so it's a worthwhile consideration! Especially since most of the furniture bonuses are shared for everyone within your group,” added the studio.
