SpatialOS Developer Improbable Seeks Deals With Top Game Publishers

After securing a $502 million USD investment from Softbank in May, SpatialOS developer Improbable is seeking deals with top game publishers and is expected to make an announcement on an new deal "very soon" according to Improbable's CEO Herman Narula. Currently SpatialOS powers World's Adrift and a handful of other games but the company is looking to get their technology into more main-stream titles.

Traditional MMOs such as Activision Blizzard Inc.’s World of Warcraft and Square Enix Holding Co.’s Final Fantasy XIV create sprawling virtual worlds by running multiple copies of their games on separate servers to accommodate millions of subscribers. That’s forced developers to reduce the level of detail in textures or the number of interactive objects in the world. SpatialOS is already capable of supporting as much as 100 times more concurrent players, with much more detail, according to Narula. -Source: Bloomberg

Ultimately it looks like the company wants to enable MMO developers to make their games truly massive. Up until now there has been a technological barrier to creating a single MASSIVE world. Even Eve Online would lag tremendously once hundreds of players gathered in a single location. Hopefully SpatialOS can resolve these issues.

“Our end game is to be able to create virtual worlds where millions of people can simultaneously interact together,” Narula said. “All developers want to do more when it comes to the worlds that they imagine.” -Source: Bloomberg
