Take Two Interactive’s publishing arm Private Division is working on a new Lord of the Rings game in partnership with Weta Workshop, the special effects and prop company responsible for the visual effects in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. The company has also worked on The Hobbit trilogy, and more recently, Amazon’s upcoming prequel series.

Like the movies, the untitled game is based on the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien and is set in Middle Earth with no actual timeline revealed as of yet. Official launch is still a ways away and but the team is planning a release sometime during Take Two’s 2024 fiscal year.

“We are thrilled to partner with Wētā Workshop to publish a game set in such an extraordinary and celebrated universe,” said Private Division Head Michael Worosz. “No entity is better equipped than the team at Wētā Workshop to create a distinctive, new Middle-earth gaming experience.”

“It's a privilege to create a new game set in Middle-earth, especially one that's so different from what fans have played previously,” Weta Workshop’s Head of Interactive Amie Wolken. “We're excited for gamers to explore Middle-earth in a way they never had before.”

Details about the new Lord of the Rings game are understandably scarce at the moment with not even a hint of what type of game it will be, although with Weta Workshop’s world design and visual effects pedigree we’re kind of hoping that it will be some kind of open-world game. It probably won’t be an MMO since Lord of the Rings Online is still very much alive and kicking.

In any case, it’s another Lord of the Rings game to look forward to alongside North Beach Games’ The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, which is headed to the Epic Games Store in spring 2023, and EA’s The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle Earth mobile gacha RPG, which just kicked off limited beta testing last month.
