The Finals Player Count Continues To Drop As It Struggles To Compete With Recent Hits

Game show-inspired free-to-play shooter The Finals seems to have fizzled out of the limelight after its extremely successful surprise launch at The Game Awards 2024. It was arguably one of the biggest game releases in December, touting an all-time peak concurrency on Steam of 242,619 players just two days after its launch and 10 million total players in just two weeks.

Unfortunately, The Finals started to bleed players shortly after, as its player count continuously dropped to a peak daily concurrency of just 23,720 players as of this writing. It’s unclear what caused the drop, but it might have something to do with several other surprise hits launching in short order, like Palworld, Helldivers 2, Enshrouded, and Last Epoch.

It’s still enjoying “Mostly Positive” reviews on Steam though, with players praising its high-octane gameplay, fully destructible environments, and innovative features. The game still has its faults though and could benefit from better matchmaking, more maps, and additional game modes. The fact that most of the remaining players are hardened vets isn’t helping the game’s player count either, effectively scaring off newbies who get steamrolled into quitting just a few matches in.

It’s too early to say whether The Finals will be just another flash in the pan. For now, it still has enough of a playerbase to ensure a smooth matchmaking experience, just be prepared to receive the occasional stomping.
