Warframe Developer Digital Extremes Announces New Free-To-Play FPS Keystone

Warframe developer Digital Extremes announced today that it is working on a new free-to-play competitive first-person shooter called Keystone. The game has been in development for some time by "a second internal development team" at the company and, despite just being announced, is actually set to enter Closed Alpha later this week.

At this point in time, Digital Extremes has yet to release any gameplay videos, but we do have a brief description of how the game will play. The game begins "on the starting square of an intriguing, mystical board game" in a world inspired by pulp fiction from the 1970s. Each player will have their own deck of cards that include "handy benefits, amazing powers, and fearsome weapons." Timing and cooperation with teammates will be required to fully utilize these decks. It's not entirely clear how it works yet, but I imagine that it will be soon.

Digital Extremes studio head Sheldon Carter had the following to say about the announcement.

The long-running success of Warframe has enabled us to build up a second internal team to create a wholly different but equally satisfying game concept that we're really excited about. Keystone originates from our roots in the FPS world and mixing genres like we have done with Warframe. We believe there's room to expand the confines of what defines a good FPS and hope our community will see the potential and get on board for the ride.

Those who are interested in taking part in the Closed Alpha can sign up for it via the official website. The first Closed Alpha test will run from May 26th to May 29th. Those who get in will be notified on May 25th.
