Players can create their own cities and customize them to every detail. Player built nations can be inhabited by other users or invaded by rival factions.

The combat system will offer a mix of traditional RPG skills hotbar and tab targeting. Played from a third-person perspective, players will be able to target specific limbs to impair their opponents.

The Repopulation Coming to Windows in Q4 2015

New Patch, Beta to be Feature Complete this Summer

CHICAGO - May 20, 2015 - The Repopulation, the Kickstarter-funded sci-fi sandbox MMORPG from Above and Beyond Technologies, will launch for Windows in Q4 of 2015.  Gamers will be provided a level of freedom unparalleled in MMORPGs as they embark on an epic adventure on the distant planet of Rhyldan.  Currently available on Steam Early Access, the title will be feature complete this summer.

The Repopulation is one of the most ambitious MMORPGs to date, due in part to the game's nation building system.  Players can construct sprawling metropolises from the ground up, paying attention to the minutest details such as furniture placement.  These nations are inhabitable by other players, NPCs and if the citizens aren't careful, enemy players and mob.

In combat gamers choose between two systems.  The more traditional RPG setting has numerous macros across the bottom and optional tab targeting.  The action setting plays like a third-person shooter with the keyboard controlling movement and the mouse aim.  Limbs can be targeted and damaged to impair enemies.  In both systems, when the action heats up vehicles, turrets and mechs can be deployed.

The open-ended nature of The Repopulation allows gamers to play how they desire.  Missions can be filtered, allowing individuals to focus on the gameplay experiences they enjoy most.  Unlike most MMOs, there are no character classes or leveling, thus decreasing the grinding nature of gameplay commonly found in the genre.  With more than 75 separate skills, each with 12 tiers, gamers can mix and match the talents they find most appealing to create their own perfect character.  With such a deep level of character customization, player interactions are key in order to find party members that complement each other.

"After more than five years of development, we are ecstatic to have a launch window," said Joshua Halls, developer, Above and Beyond Technologies.  "Gamers like you and I madeThe Repopulation possible, so we have paid close attention to feedback during testing to deliver the experience players want and deserve."

Set on the distant planet of Rhyldan, centuries into the future, players assume the role of a human clone whose original self was from the now destroyed Earth.  The clones, imprinted with all their former memories, must constantly battle for survival. However, death is a minor inconvenience as individuals can always be cloned after they perish.   Due to the limited resources on Rhyldan only select people are eligible for cloning and natural reproduction is not allowed, leading to a division in the colony.

Players choose between three factions: One World, One Nation supports the status quo; Free People's Republic believes in natural reproduction as well as cloning; and a rogue nation that is free to make and break alliances at will with the other groups.

Gamers who have already been enjoying The Repopulation will notice build 15.4.1 has added a host of new features.  These include a graphical update to Freedomtown, combat improvements, a new dungeon and multiple minigames.  To view the full patch notes please visit https://www.therepopulation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=9563

The Repopulation is available now on Steam Early Access for the sale price of $14.99.  The Repopulation typically costs $19.99.

NCsoft Shuts Down Project HON

NCsoft, the South Korean MMORPG studio best known for their Lineage series, has ceased development on their Unreal Engine 4 powered mecha shooter Project HON. The announcement was made on May 15, 2015 following the release of their Q1 financial results. The game never made it to release, but the 20+ minute gameplay trailer shown off at G-Star back in 2014 sure made the game look promising. Similiar to Hawken and Titanfall, Project HON would have allowed players to fight in a variety of massive mechs on dynamic battlefields.

No clear reason was given for the game's closure, but it may have been related to a recent incident where a member of the Project HON team was arrested for embezzling funds of over $10,000 earmarked for the game's budget. Luckily, most of the staff involved in Project HON's development have been reshuffled to other upcoming NCsoft games including Lineage Eternal and Master X Master.

The biggest losers in this whole fiasco are Exteel fans. NCsoft shut down their previous third person Mech shooter on September 1, 2010. Project HON was supposed to be the spiritual successor of Exteel, but it looks like NCsoft just doesn't believe mech shooters have much of a market in South Korea.

Top 5 Sailing MMORPGs

We’re explorers. Whether it's gazing up at the night sky or across an ocean, humans have always wondered what lies beyond the edge of the known. Perhaps the most enduring manifestation of this desire is the call of the sea. The azure main has for centuries enticed men with the prospects of fame and fortune, but perhaps the most tantalizing prospect awaiting the man at sea is a chance to discover himself.

Unfortunately, we can’t all be explorers. That means we’ll have to settle for a simulated experience. Many video games over the years have focused on sailing, with varying degrees of success. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Suikoden 4, and Sid Miere’s Pirates! come to mind. While these games all offered sailing and exploration related gameplay, they were single player experiences. I believe The MMORPG genre is uniquely suited to produce a sailing game that captures the sense of discovery most people are after. I’m still waiting for my ideal sailing MMORPG, but in the meantime, here are the top 5 sailing MMORPGs worth checking out:

1. Uncharted Waters Online

Developer: KOEI Publisher: OGPlanet Release: October 30, 2004

Based on the classic Uncharted Waters series dating back to the NES era, UWO is perhaps the closest we’ve gotten to a sailing/trading simulation MMORPG. Players join one of six European nations and have dozens of classes to chose from as they set out on their careers. The entire planet can be explored, with major cities to visit on every continent. Uncharted Waters Online was released over a decade ago and while it still has an active community, the steep learning curve can be difficult to overcome for new players.

2. Seafight

Developer/Publisher: Bigpoint Games Release: March 18, 2006

As one of the largest browser based MMOs, Seafight has enjoyed enormous popularity across Europe. Seafight plays very similarly to Dark Orbit, Bigpoint’s space ship offering, and is mainly focused on PvP gameplay.

3. Voyage Century Online

Developer: Snail Game Publisher: IGG Release: December 22, 2006

A Chinese take on Uncharted Waters Online. Voyage Century offers land and sea based gameplay with a very fast experience rate. Players can level up a variety of skills quickly and will likely spend much of their time on land. But that’s okay, the nautical theme is heavily present throughout. The game is known as Bounty Bay Online in Europe.

4. Pirates of the Burning Sea

Developer/Publisher: Flying Lab Software Release: January 21, 2008

Originally released a subscription game and published by Sony Online Entertainment, Pirates of the Burning Sea is set in the Caribbean Sea during the 18th century. The game has four factions to choose from: Great Britain, Spain, France, and Pirates. Gameplay involves both ship battles and closer range swashbuckling combat. The most interesting aspect of PotBS is its player-driven economy. Nearly everything is player produced through ownership of lumbermills, shipyards, and other factors of production.

5. Windward

Developer/Publisher: Tasharen Entertainment Release: May 12, 2015

Built on the Unity engine, Windward offers simple sailing gameplay with a minimal file size and system requirements. Rather than a persistent world, Windward offers randomly generated maps that can be enjoyed alone or shared with hundreds of players on hosted servers. Drawing its inspiration from the classic Sid Miere’s Pirates!, gameplay in Windward mainly involves sailing between coastal port cities delivering cargo, trading goods, and fighting NPC pirates along the way. Players can join one of several factions which are constantly at war with one another and take part in PvP instances.

If you know of any other sailing themed MMORPGs, released or upcoming, let me know in the comment section below!
