There are rumors flying about that Square Enix has partnered with Chinese video game giant Tencent to bring Final Fantasy XIV to mobile devices. The rumors were sparked by a report by Niko Partners which lists several games and franchises that have recently been approved by the Chinese government for release in the country.

So how do you fit 10 years’ worth of MMORPG content into a mobile game? Well, the answer is you don’t. According to Niko Partners, the FFXIV mobile is expected to be a standalone game that’s completely separate from the PC version.

Aside from Final Fantasy XIV, the list also includes a multi-platform Rainbow Six game, Marvel Snap, Marvel Rivals, Mario Golf: Super Rush, Paper Mario: The Origami King, and Dynasty Warriors 8, with more expected to be approved over the next few months.

“There have been 4 batches of import game approvals this year: February, April, June and August,” Niko Partners wrote. “Based on the trend of one batch every two months, we expect a further 30+ games to be approved by the end of the year, taking the total to over 100 and surpassing 2023’s total import game approvals (98).”

It’s worth noting that getting approval doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re already in development or that they’ll be released outside of China. In FFXIV mobile’s case, Niko Partners says that it’s nearly complete and that Square Enix will probably start sharing details in the next three to six months. Of course, there’s also the possibility that it could get axed like so many other in-development games these past few years.

In the meantime, there’s still Dawntrail to keep Final Fantasy XIV fans preoccupied over the next few months.
