Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition Announced, Official Trailer Revealed

Yesterday, we learned that Final Fantasy XV would be coming to PC in early 2018. Today we got another announcement from Square Enix regarding the Final Fantasy XV franchise

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition was revealed in a ~2 minute trailer that shows some of the starting areas of FFXV, but with a totally different art style. Optimized for mobile, the visuals and control schemes are certainly different. But what struck me most was how similar the opening scene was to that of the console original.

Final Fantasy XV will see an episodic release, with the first chapter being available for free. A launch is expected for Android, iOS, and Windows 10 Mobile platforms by this fall.

As of this writing, the reveal trailer is being met with some pretty harsh critism. The downvote ratio is high and the youtube comments are littered with gems like these:

MajorBreakfast: All this time and effort... If they had just put it into the second half of the game instead of all this mobile nonsense.

Others took the opportunity to make amusing remarks on twitter:

Square Enix is showing an enormous amount of support for the Final Fantasy XV brand. The original console release has seen many massive patches, the PC version supports enhanced 4K graphics and other technologies, and now a cute mobile version has been announced.
