We've already learned that you will be able to control the gods in Conan Exiles, but we didn't know much beyond the fact that it is a feature and that summoning the god will leave your character's body fairly vulnerable. In today's developer blog, Funcom discusses a number of other details about the system.

There are four gods that are represented in Conan Exiles: Crom, the god you choose if you don't want to get involved in the game's religion system; Mitra, the god that those who believe that they are right and want to create "sacred statues, clothing, and weapons"; Set, the god that requires ritual sacrifice, but gives his followers immunity to poison and "the ability to turn snakes into arrows"; and Yog, the god that requires his followers to "consume flesh that has been ritually purified," but gives his follows "blessed weapons and armor" in return. Should you choose any god that is not Crom, you will receive the knowledge of an acolyte at character creation.

From the beginning of the game, you will be given the ability to build an altar to your god. The altar will then allow you to craft your god's religions artefact and grants access to several other "helpful recipes." Altars can be upgraded, unlocking additional religious recipes and but it requires a lot of favor to do so.

You can earn the favor of the gods in several ways. You can use your religious artefact on the bodies of any human character that you kill in-game. If you worship set, you can cut out the hearts of enemies and take them to an altar of Set. If you worship Yog, you can harvest "unblemished human flesh" and roast it in a Yog pit. If you worship Mitra, you can purify the bodies of enemies with "your Mitraen Ankh" and return "the lingering essence of their souls to an altar of Mitra."

In order to summon an avatar, you need to have constructed a Tier 3 altar and have captured "a high priest thrall for your religion." These are then consumed when you summon an avatar.

During the actual summoning process, a "pillar of light" appears around your character. You are vulnerable to attack and easily spotted during this time. It also takes quite some time to summon an avatar. Ultimately, you will want a group of other players defending you as you summon the avatar.

Once the avatar has been summoned, the pillar of light will remain until your time controlling the avatar is over. Even if you aren't killed during the time that the avatar is summoned, you will not be able to control it for long.
