Overkill Adds Microtransactions To Payday 2, Kills Mods, And Censors Players

In 2013, Overkill made a promise. The producer, Almir, posted on the Steam Forums—before the time of Steam Discussions—to let players know that they had "made it clear that PAYDAY 2 will have no micro-transactions whatsoever" and that the loot bag in the pre-order edition was not a sign that they would. This week, everything changed. A new "Sputnik Safe" item, which is essentially a lockbox, has made its way into the game. What's more, this Safe contains skins that give players who own them an advantage over other players. You can see one of them pictured above, which has a +4 Stability stat boost.

To make matters worse, the team have "removed the LUA hooks for mods, killing off all mods [...] that add free skins." One of the more popular mods, GoonMod, was rendered unusable in the process. A deleted post confirms this and adds that the reason that you can't buy drills with offshore money is that you can earn more simply by editing a text file.

If that weren't enough, the volunteer moderators running the Steam Discussions forum for Payday 2 are currently censoring disenfranchised playersarchived link in case it gets deleted, as well—enraged by the potential pay-to-win items that have just made their way into the game. The fact that the thread about LUA hooks being removed has been deleted should be confirmation of that. Another moderator tried to explain that they aren't "censoring" players, so much as following a set of rules, but the damage has already been done and many users are unsure of if they can trust this second moderator.
