Before Valorant became popular, Riot Games was known for one game and one game only – League of Legends. Over the past few years, the studio has been taking advantage of the MOBA’s immense popularity and milking the IP for all it’s worth with several spinoffs, such as Teamfight Tactics, Legends of Runeterra, and League of Legends Wild Rift, and even a smash hit Netflix animated series, called Arcane.

The milking continues with Project L, an upcoming 2D multiplayer fighting game featuring characters from Riot’s flagship MOBA and tag team assist-style gameplay. The game is still in the early stages of development but the dev team is now putting the final touches on the core mechanics and moving on to designing game modes as well as the characters that will be featured in the game. The current roster consists of Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Jinx, and Katarina, with Illaoi revealed as the latest champion to join the growing cast of characters as of the latest dev update.

Like other games in Riot’s portfolio, Project L will be free-to-play, as confirmed by Executive Producer Tom Cannon. “Our team is made up of fighting game veterans and folks who are passionate about serving the [fighting game community],”

Cannon. “When it comes to monetization, we promise to be respectful of both your time and your wallet.”

Project L has yet to get a release date or even a release window, but you can catch a few glimpses of the game and work that’s being done on it in the new developer update video below.
