Wargaming Expects To Suffer ‘Substantial Losses’ After Pulling Out From Russia & Belarus

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Wargaming limited their marketing campaigns for World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes, starting in late February and asked affiliates to do the same. They also donated $1 million to the Ukrainian Red Cross and fired World of Tanks creative director Sergey Burkatovskiy over his pro-Russian remarks on social media.

The Cyprus-based development studio is taking their stand against Russia even further by shutting down all their studios and business operations in Russia and Belarus and has permanently left the regions as of last week.

“Effective March 31 the company transferred its live games business in Russia and Belarus to local management of Lesta Studio that is no longer affiliated with Wargaming. The company will not profit from this process either today or going forward. Much to the contrary we expect to suffer substantial losses as a direct result of this decision.”

“We will be completing the operational transition with all due speed while remaining in full compliance with all laws and ensuring the ongoing safety and support of our employees,” added Wargaming. “During the transition period the live products will remain available in Russia and Belarus and will be operated by the new owner.”

“Wargaming has also started the process of closing its studio in Minsk, Belarus. We will be providing as much severance and support as possible to our employees affected by the change. Despite the magnitude of this decision, we as a company are confident in the future of our business and are committed to delivering quality games to our players,” they concluded.

The Minsk Studio was reportedly caught by surprise at the announcement, finding out about the closure at the same time as the rest of the world. According to DevBy.io’s sources, VIP and high-ranking employees were offered the choice to relocate to other European countries, although half of the studio’s staff will ultimately need to be let go.

Meanwhile, Russia’s protracted invasion continues with more and more civilians getting caught in the crossfire. The invading Russian troops have also been accused of various war crimes and genocide which the Russian government vehemently denies.
