Arena of Valor Hits 1 Million Downloads in U.S.
Despite enormous success in its home market of China, Arena of Valor hasn't made the same inroads in the Western market. It isn't exactly a disaster though as the game has reached 1 million downloads on both iOS and Android combined since launching into beta in December 2017 according to mobile game analytics firm Sensor Tower. Revenue in Western markets totals $3 million since release.
“Despite their popularity in China and Southeast Asia, mobile MOBAs have struggled to gain traction among U.S. smartphone gamers,” said Sensor Tower cofounder Oliver Yeh. “Looking at its first six months, Arena of Valor is making a strong showing in the genre, grossing as much in six months as one of its main rivals, Vainglory, did in 10 months following its transition to free-to-play. It’s important to note that even the highest earning mobile MOBA in the U.S., Moonton’s Mobile Legends, has only made about a quarter of Fortnite’s first 90-day revenue on iOS across both platforms in two years.”
Tencent hasn't made a big marketing push for Arena of Valor yet in the West but that should change once the game launches on the Nintendo Switch later this year. Additionally, the Arena of Valor World Cup starts on July 18 which should bring more attention to the game.
Despite meager success in the West, Arena of Valor is easily one of the world's most successful games if not the most successful. Bloomberg reported last year that the game was bringing in $435 million a month in China which is more than what Fortnite made in any month (at least for now).
