Richard Gariott's New NFT MMO Project Titled 'Iron and Magic'

Richard Gariott's newest NFT MMO project finally has a name and it's 'Iron and Magic' and it bills itself as a 'Web 3.0 open world sandbox MMORPG' according to its sparse website. There's practically zero information about the gameplay and given the state of other crypto NFT games, there likely won't be any actual gameplay for years to come.

Like countless other crypto gaming projects, Iron and Magic plans to sell virtual NFT land spanning various biomes (Oasis, forest, hills, etc) to raise money.

While Richard Gariott has long been considered a legend in the MMORPG space due to the success of Ultima Online, his reputation has tanked over years. Gariott was one of the key designers behind the sci-fi MMORPG Tabula Rasa, a financial disaster that led to NCSoft restructuring and downsizing one of its U.S. studios. Gariott was also involved with a much more recent flop, Shroud of the Avatar, which was crowdfunded in 2018. After failing to reach commercial scale Gariott sold the game to another studio and quit the project in late 2019.

Given Gariott's recent failures and his eagerness to jump abroad the NFT / Web 3.0 bandwagon with likely little understanding of the technology, I can't say I'm too excited for Iron and Magic. Most Web 3 / NFT MMORPGs will likely go nowhere and readers are advised to proceed with caution if they're considering purchasing any NFTs in these projects.
